Surgical Services Nursing Manager

Plans, coordinates and provides supervisory direction for the Surgical Services department and Specialty Clinics.

A.  Maintains confidentiality of all hospital matters.

E.   Provides leadership to assure that the philosophy, goals and mission of 

       Van Diest Medical Center are integrated into the operation of the Department.

F.   Provides management direction for all department activities to ensure efficient,

      effective utilization of human, financial and material resources.

  • Participates in achievement of fiscal goals by assisting with the preparation and monitoring of annual budgets.
  • Utilizes group purchasing contracts.
  • Monitors supplies and maintains proper inventory control.
  • Monitors the accuracy of patient billing.
  • Completes all staff performance reviews according to policy.
  • Department reflects positive employee morale through low turnover.
  • Accounts for and records employee absenteeism per policy.
  • Responsible for the preparation, accuracy and approval of departmental time records.
  • Assists in development of departmental strategic plans.
  • Identifies areas wherein cost savings can be realized and works to garner the savings.
  • Prepares all required and requested reports.
  • Responsible for preparation of department work scheduled. Collaborates with Human Resources and nursing team for recruiting, interviewing and hiring new staff members as department need requires.

G.  Directs and monitors all technical aspects of department to assure compliance 

      with Federal, State, Local and Critical Access regulations.                                                                                                                                                    

  • Establishes and utilizes a comprehensive departmental quality improvement plan to monitor and improve the delivery of patient care services.
  • Department specific quality measures are identified, monitored and communicated.

H.  Evaluates and monitors educational programs for staff, patients and the  

      community.

  • Encourages professional growth and development of staff members.
  • Creates an environment for staff to maintain expertise for current practice, protocols and standards of care through the use of department meetings.
  • Purchases or prepares information to assure current patient education materials are available.

I.   Promotes teamwork within and between departments and with the

      medical staff.

  • Participates on quality improvement teams as requested with reports submitted on time.
  • Relieves staff to participate on quality improvement teams or in training.
  • Utilizes effective problem-solving processes, considers divergent views.
  • Utilizes negotiation skills and conflict management skills to facilitate conflict resolutions.

J.   Coordinates department specific tasks.

  • Assists with coordination of patient care within the department.
  • Demonstrates by performance, a high level of professionalism and clinical competency.
  • Manages daily staffing changes.
  • Acts as a coach, mentor, and resource to staff.
  • Manages daily interdepartmental patient care issues.

K.  Follows all infection control, safety and general hospital policies.

  • Demonstrates understanding of and can perform role in all emergency situations.
  • Complies with specific hospital and department policies concerning safety, including the rules of the employee exposure control plan.
  • Participates in employee work related incident and claim investigation per policy.
  • Reports all unsafe conditions.

Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements: 

Education:

  • BSN Degree or Baccalaureate in a related field preferred.
  • Graduate of a state approved nursing program. Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa.
  • Must be certified in BLS and ACLS, highly recommended NRP, PALS
  • Certification in Operating Room Nursing desirable.

Experience:

  • Five years of experience in field of nursing with at least two of those years in OR preferred.
  • Supervisory experience desirable.

Must be able to meet the physical requirements as outlined in the Job Requirements document.

This position requires successful completion of a Physical Capacity Profile screening.
