    Hamilton County

    History

    Founded in 1917

    Hamilton County Extension in Iowa began formal operations around 1917, rooted in early agricultural support and Farm Bureau partnerships. It has provided research-based education in agriculture, 4-H youth development, and community health for over a century, evolving from early livestock initiatives into a modern regional structure with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

    Extension Council members are elected by the voters of Hamilton County to serve four-year terms. They oversee the planning, preparation, marketing, and delivery of the extension educational program in the county. Every county in Iowa has an extension council. Extension councils provide, through a unique partnership with Iowa State University and other federal and state organizations, research-based, unbiased information and education to help county citizens make better decisions

    The Hamilton County Extension Council, county staff, and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach staff work together to provide research-based learning opportunities for our citizens. Through this partnership, we carry Iowa State University’s land-grant mission across Hamilton County.

    “Windbreaks and shelterbelts act as critical farm infrastructure – providing energy savings, livestock growth gains, timber and non-timber forest products, wildlife habitat, odor and dust control, aesthetics, privacy, and mental health benefits,” according to Billy Beck, Extension Forestry Specialist and assistant professor at Iowa State. “However, Iowa’s aging windbreaks are simply not functioning as they should be due to general decline, storm damage, and insect and disease issues."
