Osweiler’s Owners Announce Retirement After 42 Years

Last Updated 9/26/2025

After more than four decades of helping generations of women look and feel their best, Ron and Kathy Birkestrand of Osweiler’s have announced their retirement. The couple will celebrate this new chapter of life with a special retirement sale beginning Wednesday, September 24, offering 30% off all new fall merchandise and clearance items reduced by as much as 80%.

For Ron and Kathy, the moment is both exciting and bittersweet. “It’s been a wonderful experience working in Webster City,” shared Ron, co-owner of Osweiler’s. “The friendships we’ve made and the memories we’ve built will stay with us long after the doors close.”

Osweiler’s is a name that has been woven into Webster City’s story for generations. Originally founded in the 1950s, the brand grew steadily as a trusted source for quality women’s apparel. In the 1980s, the Birkestrands, working closely with Paul Osweiler, purchased the business and later the building. What began as a career move soon became a lifetime calling.

Kathy, a Webster City native, and Ron, whose career had spanned several Sears department store leadership positions across the Midwest, saw an opportunity to bring their family home. With four children in tow, they planted roots in Kathy’s hometown and poured their energy into creating a shopping experience that combined style, service, and hometown charm.

Over the years, Osweiler’s expanded into other Iowa communities with locations in Algona, Carroll, and Storm Lake. Yet, the Webster City store always remained the flagship. Known for offering moderately to better women’s apparel, Osweiler’s became a destination for tailored career pieces, high-quality casual wear, and wardrobe staples that customers could count on. The business also served as a cornerstone downtown property, sharing its spacious building with a local salon and adding to the vitality downtown Webster City.

Reflecting on their journey, Kathy expressed heartfelt gratitude: “I can’t think of any way I would have rather spent the last 42 years. We’ve had the privilege of dressing mothers, daughters, and even granddaughters, often under the same roof. That kind of continuity is rare, and we feel so blessed to have been part of so many milestones in people’s lives.”

The couple credits their success to loyal customers, supportive staff, and a community that embraced them from the start. They take pride in knowing Osweiler’s was more than a retailer—it was a trusted place to find quality clothing and personal service that stood the test of time.

As the retirement sale begins, the Birkestrands are optimistic about the future of both the business and the downtown building. The 4,000-square-foot property presents an opportunity for a new retailer to carry the torch and contribute to Webster City’s vibrant main street.

For now, Ron and Kathy look forward to enjoying full retirement in Webster City, spending more time with family and savoring the community they’ve always called home. “We’re deeply thankful,” Ron said. “Webster City has given us everything we hoped for—and more.”

The retirement sale will continue until inventory is gone. For more information contact Ron & Kathy Birkestrand at (515) 832-2733.
