Third Thursday Coffee Highlights Daily Freeman-Journal’s Lasting Impact
The Webster City Area Chamber of Commerce extends a sincere thank you to the Daily Freeman-Journal for hosting April’s Third Thursday Coffee. Attendees had the unique opportunity to step inside one of Webster City’s most historic and impactful businesses, first established in 1857.
The tour offered an eye-opening look at the scale of the Daily Freeman-Journal’s operations. While many recognize the publication as Webster City’s trusted local newspaper, its reach extends far beyond the community. The facility prints 84 community newspapers from across Iowa, nearly spanning the entire state—all from its downtown Webster City location.
Attendees were especially impressed by the capabilities of the printing press, which produces 6,000 copies per hour under normal conditions and can increase to 9,000 copies per hour when needed. Even more remarkable, the entire press operation is powered 100% by air compression, showcasing an innovative and efficient approach to large-scale printing.
The operation requires approximately 9,000 printing plates each month, and ink is refilled on an industrial scale similar to a fuel tanker. Notably, the ink used is 100% soy-based, reflecting environmentally conscious practices.
Beyond the pressroom, the Daily Freeman-Journal is supported by a dedicated team of 25 employees across editorial, reporting, advertising, digital processing, press operations, and administration. Many team members have decades of experience, with some continuing family legacies within the organization.
Notable staff include Angie Anderson, Plant Manager and Chamber Ambassador, who has served the company for more than 25 years, and Community Editor Kollen Taylor does a fabulous job carrying on the wonderful tradition.
A fascinating historical highlight shared during the tour revealed that the newspaper’s name is rooted in abolitionist history. One of its founding partners was a strong advocate against slavery, using the publication as a platform to take a stand.
Today, the Daily Freeman-Journal continues to be an award-winning publication, earning 17 journalism and industry awards this year alone. It remains a vital source of information for Webster City and surrounding communities.
