Buzz Into Beekeeping: Learn the Basics and Sample Local Honey at Briggs Woods Park
Curious about bees, honey, and how you can support pollinators in your own backyard? Join Hamilton County Conservation for “Beekeeping Basics & Free Honey Samples” on Friday, July 25, 2025, from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Shelter 1 in Briggs Woods Park, Webster City.
Presented by Mark Moberly of MOBEEZ, a local beekeeper and advocate for pollinators, this free community program will offer an engaging introduction to beekeeping, honey harvesting, and pollinator-friendly gardening. Mark will guide participants through the essentials of starting and maintaining a hive—both inside and outside of city limits—while sharing insights into costs, regulations, and common concerns.
Attendees will get to view a live bee observation hive up close, taste raw local honey, and take home free honey-based recipes that show how honey can be used as a natural alternative to sugar in the kitchen. In addition, County Naturalist John Laird will highlight the best flowering plants for supporting bees and butterflies, offering tips for building your own pollinator-friendly garden at home.
This event counts toward the Iowa Junior Naturalist Program—a free program for children ages 6–12 that encourages curiosity and participation in activities related to environmental education, conservation, outdoor recreation, and historical interpretation.
It’s a great way for kids (and their adults) to explore nature and fulfill program requirements through fun, experiential learning. “This event is a sweet way to learn how bees impact our food system and what each of us can do to support them,” said Laird. “Whether you're curious about keeping bees or just love local honey, this program offers something for everyone."
